Performance Testing
Overview
Honoring the tradition and the history of the Shagya as a horse physically capable of being a historic war horse along with its’ noted elegance and kind nature, the Performance Shagya Registry is committed to upholding the exemplary breeding theories that made the Shagya what it is today.
The purpose of performance testing is to guide breeders in the continued development of a horse that is both attractive and functional. It is the modern-day equivalent of the in-the-field service for military horses, carriage horses, or light riding horses.
Performance testing provides a great deal of information about the breed as a whole:
- Allows for the external inspection for breed type and correctness,
- Provides proof of suitability to work,
- Gives breeders valuable information for the selection of breeding stock,
- Provides buyers with accurate information regarding performance abilities of the breed as a whole and on an individual basis,
- Secures a future for the Shagya breed as a versatile riding horse.
The Performance Shagya Registry in the United States is the only registry in the country developed to align with the International Shagya-Araber Gesellschaft (ISG) General Studbook Regulation Framework (RZBO). The purpose of the PShR is to incorporate the RZBO standards in a format compatible with the extensive distance between Shagya owners in the USA. While maintaining the same level of performance excellence in the RZBO guidelines, the PShR testing process made minimal modifications:
- The 2007 RZBO guidelines require stallions to complete their testing by a maximum age in some of the performance options. Due to the fact performance criteria at any level has not been incorporated into the USA approval for breeding process for a couple of decades, there are several generations of untested Shagya horses in the USA. To accommodate those horses, the PShR will not at this time establish age limits on horses seeking PShR Performance Licensing or Specialty recognition.
- To accommodate horses with past performance records or older horses, the PShR will review historical information on a case by case basis. Horses will be evaluated on their overall performance in one or the combination of several disciplines exemplifying athletic qualities.
- Traditionally, performance testing in Europe is conducted at an established location with horses competing together in front of one set of judges. At this time in the USA this specified venue is not possible or practical, therefore, open competition will be used to test horses seeking PShR performance licensing. The mandatory requirements will be conducted at Shagya inspection sites; however, a horse can begin and/or complete their performance requirements before being evaluated at a Shagya inspection.
- The 2007 RZBO guidelines have established studbook categories relevant to the stallion testing being required throughout the years. The PShR studbook categories have aligned with the RZBO definition, however, due to the number of untested generational stallions and/or mares, additional criteria has been established to allow present day breeding stock to meet RZBO standards.
- The RZBO standards for testing have typically only been applied to stallions, with a few mares entering the testing. The PShR welcomes and encourages all stallions, mares and geldings to be tested. Proof of performance is the basis for the Shagya breed from the beginning and will continue to establish a sound and factual base for the Shagya breed in the USA. Stallions and geldings will test under at the same level of standards. The standards for mares have been modified due to the limited time to perform versus being used as a broodmare. However, mares are allowed to compete at the same level as the stallions and geldings and will receive recognition for their performance.
- One of the greatest virtues of the Shagya throughout history has been the use of Shagya bloodlines as “improver” outcrosses by other breeds. To acknowledge these horses with Shagya bloodlines, the PShR has developed additional studbook categories not found in the RZBO standards.
PShR Performance Licensing/Tested Overview
PShR Licensing shall be awarded to stallions and mares meeting the PShR requirements and will be placed in the PShR studbooks per their performance history along with pedigree. PShR Testing will be awarded to geldings meeting the PShR requirements and will be placed in the PShR studbooks per their performance history along with pedigree.
Horses seeking PShR Licensing Certification do not have to be registered with the PShR to be nominated, however all horses of at least 25% Shagya bloodlines seeking PShR Licensing are welcomed to register with the Performance Shagya Registry. In addition, purebred Arabian horses are eligible for Licensing. Horses completing the PShR testing will be recorded as per PShR studbook categories. Owners do not have to be PShR members to nominate a horse for Licensing Certification.
Licensed/Tested horses will carry an “*” after their name. Elite horses will be noted with a *E* after their name.
Horses completing the PShR licensing requirements must have paid all fees in full and completed a PShR Licensing Application to be recognized as a PShR Performance Horse. All Licensed/Tested or Elite horses may be listed on the PShR website and may be used in educational or promotional PShR material. Horses achieving these performance standards will have lifetime PShR recognition; this recognition is not dependent on the membership status of the owner.
The mandatory testing requirements of the Performance Shagya Registry are listed below (A to H). Horses must be nominated and complete the established criteria to be PShR Licensed as a performance tested horse. Exceptional individuals may earn Elite status through the Performance Shagya Registry. Extenuating circumstance prohibiting the completion of the above criteria may be submitted to the PShR Board of Directors for review.
Mandatory Requirements For All Horses Seeking PShR Licensing:
1. Inspected – Mares and Stallions will be inspected and Geldings will be evaluated per ISG standards. Horses are to be shown on the triangle and at liberty both directions of the ring.
2. SCID - All purebred Arabian mares or stallions must submit a negative test for SCID and must be on file with the PShR Registrar. Please refer to the PShR Breeding Guidelines for complete instructions. Geldings do not have to be SCID tested.
3. Free Jumping - All horses must complete a free jumping course at a recognized PShR inspection site as per ISG recommendations.
4. Interior Test -All horses will be required to complete an Interior Test as per the ZSAA (Zuchtverband für Sportpferde arabisher Abstammung e.V.) criteria at a recognized PShR inspection.
5. DNA – All breeding stock must have results on file with the PShR registrar. Geldings do not have to be DNA tested unless deemed necessary by the PShR.
6. Veterinary Examination - All horses nominated for Licensing will stand for a veterinary examination at a recognized PShR inspection site. The exam will be conducted by a licensed veterinarian and will include but is not limited to a flexion test and trot out on a hard surface. An exam for anomalies, heart defects, existing faults of teeth or testicles, deficiencies or other conditions indicating genetic predisposition will be conducted per the RZBO guidelines.
7. Under Saddle – All horses 4 years old or older must be ridden at a PShR inspection. Horses must be presented at a walk, trot and canter in the discipline style of the riders’ choice. Horses will be ridden both directions of the ring, complete a 20 meter circle and cross the diagonal of the ring. If possible two or three horses will work in the ring at one time. Mixing stallions with mares can be an exception. Observation will include:
- Overall impression
- Willingness to work
- Tractability
- Temperament
- Way of going
- One or two test riders will also ride the horse and report to the judges their overall impression
8. Open Competition Requirements completed and documented. Categories include a choice in one of the following divisions: 30-day testing; Jumping; Dressage; Endurance; Distance Riding or Driving; and Racing. Additional categories may be considered upon submission to the PShR Board of Directors.
Due to the fact that the USA Shagya has not been recorded and/or registered per the ISG RZBO standards, the PShR will allow a transition period for posthumous horses until 2012. Historical horses approved for Shagya breeding in the USA, with complete documentation, can apply for placement in the PShR studbooks based on past performance. In addition, progeny submitted for meritorious and licensing critera do not have to be registered in the PShR studbooks during this same grace period. Complete documentation must be supplied to count achievements for horses nominating for Licensing or Specialty recognition. These non-registered progeny will be used for documentation purposes only, they will not be individually placed in the PShR studbooks unless they apply for PShR registration.
